Yarmouth Stadium is, and always has been, committed to ensuring the highest welfare standards for greyhounds while they are actively racing and after they retire.

Greyhound racing in Great Britain is closely regulated by the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB).  In 2022 GBGB launched a new long-term welfare strategy ‘A Good Life for Every Greyhound’ to promote and protect welfare across all stages of a racing greyhound’s life: breeding, rearing, active years and retirement.

Yarmouth Stadium is committed to this strategy and more

Greyhound with a Vet at the Stadium

As with all racing there is a slight associated injury risk but Greyhound Racing Rules demand that any greyhound is re-trialled before returning to race. The greyhound is also checked by the on-track veterinary surgeon. Additionally any greyhound which hasn’t raced for 21 days is also required to run a satisfactory regrading trial.

The Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders charity pays the full costs of veterinary treatment and aftercare for any greyhound injured on our track.

GBGB stewards take, frequent, unannounced and random urine samples from trialling and racing greyhounds to ensure that racing is kept drug free.

We have a zero tolerance policy for towards any owner or trainer euthanising a healthy greyhound on economic grounds. Such action would result in a racing ban at the Yarmouth Stadium.

Our commitment to greyhound welfare stretches beyond the greyhound while it is racing, extending to the retired ex- racer. We believe that every ex-racer should be responsibly rehomed. We have a strong relationship with Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders. This is an independent registered charity originally founded in 1999 by the Franklin family, which owns the Yarmouth Greyhound Stadium.

The Charity focuses on caring for ex-racing greyhounds (particularly those that raced at the Yarmouth Stadium) and finding the greyhounds their forever homes. The Charity continues to be strongly supported by the Franklin family.
