Loving homes are required for retired racing greyhounds of all ages. Greyhounds make great pets!

Yarmouth Greyhound Homefinders was founded in 1999 by Stadium owner Stephen Franklin. With greyhound welfare a priority, now and then, Stephen decided that all greyhounds should have a loving home once their racing careers were over.

Fast forward over 25 years and Homefinders is now a small, independent registered charity committed to finding the right home for the right greyhound.

Since it began, Homefinders has rehomed well over 2600 greyhounds and has built a great community of volunteers, supporters and friends along the way.

As well as focussing on finding homes for the greyhounds, Homefinders pays the cost of veterinary treatment and aftercare for any greyhound injured on the track.

Greyhounds are signed over to Homefinders by their trainers, and then come into the Homefinders kennels ready to be rehomed.

Adopting a greyhound

Greyhound make wonderful pets; they are loving, generally lazy and exceptionally loyal, needing only two twenty minute walks a day but many are happy to do much more. When not up and about they are likely to be found dozing on a sofa or snuggled up in a cosy duvet waiting for their next treat.

Homefinders staff and volunteers work very hard to find the right dog for the right home; that may be with a young family, an elderly person or as a companion to another dog . Whatever the situation there is certain to be a greyhound who will fit the space.

Greyhounds often go on to become Pets As Therapy dogs or PAT dogs as they are generally known. Their calm disposition is a great asset when visiting hospitals, care homes and schools.

If you would like to talk about rehoming a dog our Kennels Manager, Molly Paul, is the person to talk to. Molly loves greyhounds. She has a deep understanding of greyhounds, their nature and needs. This not only helps to ensure that the greyhounds in our kennels receive the best possible care and love but also helps Molly to match the right dog with the right home. Molly will work with you to find the right hound for you. And support is on hand after you adopt should you need it.

Become a volunteer

Although YGH has a very small number of paid kennels staff (mainly part-time) the charity relies on volunteers for almost everything! We are always happy to see new volunteers and the there’s a “job” to suit everyone!

Here are a few ideas on how you might be able to help:-

Help with walking, socialising, grooming and playing with the dogs at the kennels.
Help with fostering a greyhound temporarily.
Home checking.
Help at one or more of our Open Days by helping on a stall or running your own stall, game, etc.
Help with our stall at any of the events we attend. We need people to help us set up at the start, stay for the duration of the event (or as long as you can) and put away at the end. Can you do this for just one or more of our events?
Help with collections and fundraising at The Stadium in Yarmouth.
Help at one of our street/store/fete collection days with your dog in or near your area.
Join the Fundraising Committee which meets on a Saturday morning about every 6 weeks from March to October.
Administration (usually these jobs can be done from home)
Help with raising awareness of the work of the charity including harnessing social media .
Help by placing our posters in local shops, pubs, clubs, businesses, etc. It will be a huge benefit in making people aware of our work.
Collect money in a jar in small amounts from friends, family etc and purchase tinned dog food for us to use at the kennels. People are doing this already and it is such a valuable help and, of course, you know exactly where the money is going.
Run a coffee morning at your home to raise our profile (and raise some money).
Obtain a collecting tin from us and place it in a public place e.g. shop, business etc. Pick it up every now and again and replace it.
Put your own idea into action and we will help where we can.

And you don’t have to have a greyhound to volunteer.
